Since assuming office in May 2022, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has faced a myriad of challenges that require decisive leadership and strategic vision.

His administration has identified three main priorities that are crucial for the stability and prosperity of Somalia.

These are the war against Al-Shabaab, defending Somalia's unity and sovereignty, and advancing democratic governance through universal suffrage.

Each of these priorities reflects the Head of State’s commitment to restoring peace, unity, and democratic values in a nation that has endured decades of conflict and instability.

This discussion will delve into these priorities, highlighting the president's actions, statements, and the broader implications for Somalia's future.

War Against Al-Shabaab

The fight against Al-Shabaab has been at the forefront of President Mohamud's agenda since he assumed office. Al-Shabaab has been responsible for numerous attacks that badly inflicted harm on lives of many citizens in various regions in the country.

Recognizing the urgent need to address this threat, President Mohamud has adopted a comprehensive approach that encompasses military, economic, and ideological strategies.

From the outset, the president has been actively involved in military operations against the Al-Shabab group. In June 2022, he made a significant visit to the frontlines in the Lower Shabelle region, a key battleground in the fight against the terror group.

This visit was particularly risky, as it took place in an area known for its volatility.

In addition to direct military engagement, President Mohamud has emphasized the importance of an economic war against Al-Shabaab.

The group has historically funded its operations through collecting money from local communities. By disrupting these financial networks, the government aims to weaken Al-Shabaab's operational capabilities.

In recent developments, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has emphasized the urgent need to counter the ideological narratives propagated by the Al-Shabab group.

Recognising the influence of religious leaders, he convened a meeting with Somali Clerics, urging them to address the negative practices of the group that misrepresent Islam.

During this pivotal gathering, the scholars reached a significant resolution: the group should no longer be referred to as Al-Shabaab, but instead by their new designation, Kharijites; a term the government uses to call the group now.

Defending Somalia’s integrity

Another critical priority for the Head of State has been to defend Somalia's unity and sovereignty.

He condemned the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Ethiopia and Somaliland, labeling it “illegal and a direct threat to Somalia's unity and territorial integrity” and has consistently emphasized that Somaliland is an integral part of Somalia.

In a recent statement, the president said, "Somalia is free and independent, and no one can dictate our terms. We can sit and agree on our own terms and not on their own terms."

Democracy: One Person, One Vote/Universal Suffrage

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has also made significant strides toward establishing a democratic framework in Somalia, with a focus on implementing direct elections based on the principle of one person, one vote.

His administration has prioritized the passage of constitutional chapters that address electoral processes and political party regulations, laying the groundwork for a more inclusive political landscape.

The Somali Parliament successfully passed the first four chapters of the new constitution, which included provisions for direct elections.

On several occasions, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud expressed his commitment to democratic governance, stating, "Somalia is on the path to direct elections, and we will ensure that every citizen has a voice in shaping our future and electing their own leaders."

The president has been vocal about the importance of universal suffrage, emphasizing that it is a fundamental right for all Somalis.

Through these efforts, President Mohamud aims to foster a political environment that encourages participation and representation, ultimately leading to a more stable and prosperous Somalia.
