What you need to know:

  • Reading the book enables one to develop the ability to handle criticism and respond non-defensively to negative attacks.

At long last, we have a communication book for Kenya's media practitioners, produced by Kenyan scholars.

Not that it can be used by international practitioners, but the ease with which the writers use local scenarios to explain very complex concepts is apt. Its highly recommended for communication students and practitioners.

While the book targets communication students at undergraduate level, in the increasingly connected world it comes in very handy as a self-read material.

The aim of the book is to prepare users — those in practice and students — to effectively communicate via print, broadcast and online media.

One learns how to ease the tension that is normally associated with interactions with the media, help make public presentations and appearances, equip them with skills on effective press interviews, teach them on effective crisis communication.

Reading the book enables one to develop the ability to handle criticism and respond non-defensively to negative attacks.

DN body text: An Introduction to Communication is written by Dr Rahab Nyaga, Dr Dorothy Njoroge and Dr Charles Nyambuga, leading scholars and lecturers in journalism and public relations in Kenya.

It is edited by senior scholars in journalism and communication — Dr Ndeti Ndati, Dr Muiru Ngugi and Dr Hellen Mberia.

It’s published by the Oxford Press.
