Njoroge, Mongeli crowned national chess champions

What you need to know:

  • Njoroge, who is ranked 14th nationally with a Fide rating of 1901, outwitted defending champion Mehul Gohil, who is Kenya’s fourth best player with a Fide rating of 2014.
  • “It is unbelievable for me,” said Njoroge, who drove away with the brand new Mazda Semio car thanks to his victory in the tough, "open" section. Mongeli of Nakuru Chess Club outsmarted Triza Mwendwa in the “ladies” section play-offs. 

Martin Njoroge and Woman Fide Master (WFM) Saha Mongeli are the 2021 Kenya Chess men and women's champions.
