Kasarani facilities recognised after successful World U-20 event

The press facilities of the 2021 World Athletics Under-20 Championships held in Nairobi have been named among the top 10 by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) Awards for the year ending. 

The global event, which attracted athletes from more than 100 countries took place at the 60,000-capacity Moi International Centre (MISC), Kasarani from August 18 to 22.

Kenya finished first in the world with 16 medals (eight gold, one silver and seven bronze).

Finland were second with five medals (four gold and one silver) while Nigeria with four gold and three bronze medals.

In the outcome published Thursday by AIPS on their official website, the press facilities of the 2021 World Athletics Under-20 Championships emerged ninth globally with 142 votes.

Despite the inconvenience brought about by Covid-19 pandemic which included social distancing, organisers of the global championships pulled all stops to ensure the about 100 journalists covered the event at their comfort.

During the four days that the event took place, the scribes had uninterrupted internet and power connectivity.

There were also live screens that relayed results real time, making it easy for the journalists to file breaking news on time while enough space in the area ensured adherence to social distancing. The organisers also ensured that athletes were protected against Covid-19 by creating a good space between them and the journalists during post-race interviews.

There were also desks with laptops where journalists without their own gadgets could file their stories and pictures. 

The press facilities for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games topped with 1453 votes.
