The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will conduct elections for the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) on April 24.
The electoral body got the nod at a special general meeting held in Nairobi ahead of the Centre for Corporate Governance (CCG) on Wednesday.
“We held a special general meeting to discuss two extremely important aspects. As an executive, we try to ensure that the electoral process is extremely open and transparent. So, today, the first important aspect was to present to the meeting the electoral body.
We had two nominations, IEBC and the Centre for Corporate Governance. The assembly has approved or unanimously passed that the IEBC will be the ones to conduct our elections. We therefore shall proceed and finalise with IEBC and then they can start or take over the process,” NOC-K Secretary General Francis Mutuku told Nation Sport.
The second major aspect was to go through the electoral rules.
“From the nomination forms, members have gone item by item. On the electoral code, members have gone item by item. Where people were not comfortable with the proposal, it was adjusted.
At the end of the meeting, we were all in agreement on the various documents which will be guiding us, giving us the roadmap, defining our relationship, defining what actions we can take, what timelines we need to observe and such other aspects which are very important for the electoral process,” said Mutuku, who is eyeing the NOC-K presidency.
Mutuku said the path was now clear for the elections to be held. “We are going by the timelines. Our elections are scheduled for the 24th of April, so the 21-day notice will be given before that.
The notice to the registrar will be given straight after this. All the documents which have been approved will be sent to the various candidates,” he said after the meeting attended by Sports Registrar Rose Wasike.
Mutuku disclosed that the electoral board will be in place by next week after NOC-K and IEBC sign the memorandum of understanding.
“That means in effect we are now right in the middle of the electoral process, ready for the elections on the 24th of April. The players can go start their campaigns,” said Mutuku.
