In the heart of Nairobi’s Industrial Area, a determined group of ladies enjoy their martial arts classes every Saturday between 8:30am and 9:30am.

What started as a self defence class to ward off muggers and attackers has culminated in students having basic skills in karate, judo and aikido, the leading martial arts sports.

The ladies enjoy the classes more because apart from gaining skills, strength, stamina, flexibility and speed, they have become confident in knowing that they are more agile as it has helped reduce their weight, improve blood circulation, develop instinct and remove tension therefore advance performance in their different fields.

Correct mental attitude

The ladies are trained by a senior Black Belt karateka and instructor, Kaizer Karimbhai, and a Black Belt karateka, Lucy Karobia, with the sessions running every Saturday morning from 8.30am.

“The sessions are on Road ‘C’, off Enterprise road and ladies willing to sign up can contact us on telephone number 0712352361,” said one of the organisers, Victoria Muteti.

The instructors have trained the ladies on the importance of the correct mental attitude.

“Self-defence techniques are not for showing off, but rather for the development of the spirit and character of a person. The ladies are learning patience, tolerance and humility,” Karimbhai says.

Students are encouraged to have good manners and, therefore, not to bully nor provoke others.
