Hockey: Sikh Union, MSC fight for bronze in African tourney

- In Wednesday’s fixtures, Mombasa Sports Club (MSC) defeated Smouha Club from Egypt 1-0.
- In the other men’s results, Western Jaguars recorded their first win, thumping Niger Flickers 6-1 to finish fourth in Pool “A”.
Sikh Union Club and Mombasa Sports Club (MSC) men’s and women’s teams will battle for bronze medals in the African Cup for Clubs Championships hockey on Friday.
Sikh will play Port Fouad of Egypt, while MSC play Kada Queens of Nigeria at the Youth City Hockey Stadium, Port Said, in Egypt.
Defending champions Sharkia from Egypt will battle compatriots Aircraft Factory in the men’s final later in the day.
In the women’s category final, champions Ghana Revenue Authority from Ghana will line up against Smouha from Egypt.
GRA topped Pool “A” with 12 points from four matches while Smouha finished first in Pool “B” with nine points.
MSC finished second in Pool “B “ with seven points while Kada were second in Pool “A” with nine points.
Kenya’s other women’s team USIU-A were relegated to third position in Pool “B” because of an inferior goal difference.
Sikh were second in Pool “B” with seven points while Port were second in Pool “A” with nine points.
Thursday was a rest day. Sikh and USIU-A needed to win their last pool matches on Wednesday to gain passage to the respective finals but ended up obtaining draws at the Youth City Hockey Stadium, Port Said, in Egypt.
Sikh played to a 4-4 draw against Ghana Revenue Authority while the varsity side played to a 1-1 draw to Plateau of Nigeria in the women’s match.
“We really wanted to play in the final, and we gave our all in the match but our best was not good enough,” said USIU-A coach John Kabuu.
