Zim man Chinhoi takes command at Ugandan Open

Zimbabwean professional Robson Chinhoi produced so far the best round in the 2020 Uganda Open, a six under par 66, to claim a seven shots lead as the Tusker Malt Lager sponsored tournament marked its half way mark at the par 72 Uganda Golf Club course in Kampala.

Chinhoi, who won the second leg of the Safari Tour at Royal Nairobi Golf Club two months ago, hit a string of birdies on the wet course to make the second round cut with a two rounds total of seven under par 137, leaving Ugandan pro Deo Akope and Kenya’s Samuel Njoroge seven shots behind as the pros are joined by the amateurs in Saturday’s third round which gets under way at 8.30am.

Akope carded two over par 74 while Njoroge fired one under par 71 for the two to tie for the second place on level par 144, with defending champion Madilitso Muthiya tying for the fourth place with home player Philip Kasozi.

Like Akope, Muthiya carded two over par 74 for a two rounds total of 145 while Kasozi shot level par 72 to also wind up the day on 145.

Joining Samuel Njoroge on the leaderboard was six times Uganda Open champion Dismas Indiza, David Wakhu, Eric Ooko, Greg Snow and Edwin Mudanyi.

Indiza, who finished fourth last year, is seeking a seventh Uganda Open title. He carded level par 72 for 146, while Wakhu, Ooko and Mudanyi all fired two over par 74 with Snow posting 75 for 147.

Only 13 Kenyans made the eight over par 152 second round cut, to chase for the cash prize plus some points towards the 2020/2021 Safari Tour Order of Merit or the “Road to the 2021 Magical Kenya Open."
