Kiplagat Chebii crowned 'King of the Course'

Royal Nairobi Golf Club’s Kiplagat Chebii emerged the 2021 ICEA "Lion King of the course" first leg champion, after posting an impressive 41 points at the par 72 Machakos Golf Club course at the weekend.

Playing off handicap 16, Chebii, bogeyed the fourth and seventh for an impressive front nine score of 24 points. And despite picking up more bogeys at the back nine’s 12th, 15th and 16th with a seven at the par four- 13th and another triple bogey at the par three-17th, 17 points was still good enough for the overall title.

Taking the men’s title with a score of 39 points was Eric Kivavi of Machakos, who won by a point from Francis Musembi and third placed Nderitu Macharia. Taking the staff prize was Ruiru Sports Club’s Peter Mukuria, who carded 34 points to win well ahead of Benson Mwangi who managed 26 points.

In the guest section, Railway’s William Moturi won on 34 points with Golf Park’s Diana Mbuba claiming the ladies title with an impressive score of 39 points, well ahead of T. Ndivo on 36 points. Winning the nines were Colin Nzioka of Limuru and David Kimanthi, both with 22 points each. Ben Murimi and S.W. Ndolo won the longest drive, while winning the nearest to pin was David Kimanthi.

Speaking during the prize giving ceremony, ICEA Lion General Business CEO, Paul Muthaura, thanked Eastern region residents and club members in particular for supporting the company’s products.

“We will walk with you all the way, and I am hoping to see you in the rest of the events in the series in Thika Greens, Ruiru, Nanyuki, Nandi and Nyali.Many of you have our golf policy and we are here to make it easy to access those services," said Muthaura.

At Limuru Country Club, Ida Njogu carded an excellent 43 points to win the Directors, Lady Captain Year Opener sponsored by Keroche Breweries, where Steve Koigi beat Stanley Kariuki on countback with 40 points to emerge the men winner.

John Ndiho claimed the third prize with 39 points as Patricia Wangongu on 38 beat Priscilla Waithaka by one point to claim the ladies first prize. Wairimu Maina was third on 36 points and the nines went to Samurel Ngaruiya on 21.

Leading the guests was Jane Wambui on 37 points, while David Onyonka won the nearest to pin and the longest driver winners were John Gathu and K. Gachaga, while Jane Kimani was the nearest to pin lady winner, with Jane Wambui emerging the guest winner on 37 points. The Sponsors' winner was David Irimu who posted 37 points.

At Nyali Golf and Country Club, Susan Stokes posted 37 points to win the Lady Captain’s (Mary Kandu) prize by one point from Mary Kinaro. Grace Karanja finished third on 35 points, while in fourth place was Lena Breitner on 34 points. The guest winner was Mercy Nyanchama from Vet Lab Sports Club with 34 points.

She won by two points from Gladys Mutisya and Nancy Wairimu.
