Upcoming runner, Lorna Cherono, stormed to victory in junior women’s 6 kilometres race on Saturday during Betika National Cross Country Championships at Eldoret Sports Club in Uasin Gishu County.

Cherono, representing North Rift region, ran a tactful race and surged forward in the final lap to win in 21 minutes, 11.7 seconds ahead of Joyline Chepkemoi, also from North Rift region, who timed 21:15.6. Cynthia Chepkurui was third in 21:21.1.

Cherono was elated to have beaten tough opposition to win.

“I’m so happy to have won the race today. Having previously competed in the Athletics Kenya Cross Country series, I was ready to go for the big prize here today. This should hopefully put me in a good place with regard to my future races,” said Cherono.

In junior men's 8km race, Kevin Kiprop from North Rift who trains at Sinonin in Baringo County, ran a brilliant race to win in 24:57.4 ahead of Frankline Kibet who clocked 24:59.3.

Emmanuel Lemiso Someki finished third in 25:00.0

Kiprop said that although the race was tough, he stayed with the lead group, then broke into a sprint in the last few metres to win.
