Ronald Kirui claims Wareng win

  • Ronald Kirui and Irene Cheptai on Sunday respectively won the men’s and women’s senior titles at the Tuskeys Wareng Cross Country 10km races.
  • Kirui, 22, against prediction, floored big names that included 2013 World Cross Country champion Japheth Korir and seasoned cross country runner Moses Letoiye. 

Ronald Kirui and Irene Cheptai on Sunday respectively won the men’s and women’s senior titles at the Tuskeys Wareng Cross Country 10km races.

Kirui, 22, against prediction, floored big names that included 2013 World Cross Country champion Japheth Korir and seasoned cross country runner Moses Letoiye. 

Kirui, who is fresh from pacing Eliud Kipchoge at the recent Delhi Half Marathon, hit top gears, clocking 28:03 at the tape as Moses Mukono finished second in 28:07 and Timothy Rono third in 28:08.

FANCIED KORIR

Fancied Korir could only managed a fourth placing after clocking 28:14 under clear blue skies but with head winds.

“My target is to represent Kenya at the World Cross and I am happy that my form is picking up rather well,” said Kirui, a 10,000m finalist at the 2016 World Junior Championships.

“I managed to top this race against the big names.

“This is a big confidence boost. I really want to fight for a ticket to the World Cross in Kampala next year.

Longstrided Cheptai lept to victory in the women’s 10km race as she crossed the finish line in 31:15.9 as 2010 Olympic Youth 3000m steeplechase winner Gladys Chesir closed in second in 31:41 and Vivian Jemutai wrapping up the
