Iten's Daniel Simiu rolled out a majestic performance from start to win senior men's 10km race during the opening leg of Athletics Kenya Cross Country Series at the People's Park in Machakos on Saturday.

Simiu stayed in front of the pack up until after six kilometres before he broke away to build an unassailable lead for victory in 28 minutes and 27.7 seconds.

"This was my second cross country race and it proved tough especially the muddy course and the huge entry," said Simiu, who is preparing for the World Indoor Tour starting February next year.

"I want to take a stab at 3,000m to see how it goes ahead of the World Indoor Championships," said Simiu, who will then shift his focus to the Tokyo Olympic Games due next year.

The World Indoor Championships was delayed by one year to March 19 to 21 next year in Nanjing, China while 2021 Tokyo Summer Games will be held July 23 to August 8.

Simiu edged out greenhorn Isaac Kibet from Mount Elgon, who took second place in 28:54.68 as Elgeyo Marakwet's Elvis Cheboi finished third in 28:54.9.
