Three people died and 25 others injured following a road accident involving an Eldoret Express bus at Matulo on the Webuye-Bungoma Road.

The driver of the Bungoma-bound vehicle is reported to have lost control of the vehicle while approaching a bend before it rolled several times and overturned at Matulo, a few kilometres from Webuye town.

The driver, a male passenger and a female passenger died on the spot in the 4am accident.

Six passengers were seriously injured in the dawn accident and are fighting for their lives at Webuye District Hospital while 19 others are reported to have suffered various injuries but are in stable condition.

A police officer who was among the first people to arrive at the scene of the accident but cannot be quoted because he is not authorised to speak to the media suspects the driver of the ill-fated bus could have been dozing.

The officer said Police pulled several injured victims from the bus before rushing them to hospital.

When the Nation visited the scene in the early hours of the morning, personal belongings of the passengers were strewn all over the road.

The wreckage of the bus which was still at the scene was towed to Webuye police station.

Bungoma East OCPD Mr Willy Simba confirmed the accident and urged drivers to be careful especially when driving at night.

BLACK SPOT

He warned that the area around Matulo trading centre had now become a black spot.

“Only on Friday last week, two people died at the same spot of today’s accident. The two who were a motorcycle rider and his passenger were hit by a truck that sped off after the accident. We urge all road users to be extra cautious,” he said.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Webuye district hospital mortuary.

There has been an increase in the number of road accidents along the Webuye Malaba highway which is still undergoing rehabilitation.

Drivers have been driving carelessly ignoring important road signs including speed limits leading to many accidents.

Residents have called for the road rehabilitation exercise to be expedited to cut down on road carnage.
