Presidential aspirant William Ruto has hinted his running mate will be from the Meru region.

Plans to name Energy minister Kiraitu Murungi as his running mate were at an advanced stage, said the United Republican Party hopeful.

Speaking during a Sunday service at Igoji Catholic Church in Imenti South, Mr Ruto said Mr Murungi fitted the bill perfectly.

“I have a good working relationship with the minister and I feel he is best placed to be my running mate. His experience, track record and stance on political and social issues make him the best person,” he said.

Best suited for position

He said should Mr Murungi decline, he would pick a running mate from the coastal region as he had set his sights on the two areas.

“Discussions are at an advanced stage and I feel Kiraitu is best suited for the position,” Mr Ruto said.

The Eldoret North MP later met leaders at Chuka in Tharaka Nithi County.

He said some top contenders were fond of opposing the government. “All the candidates have different talents and personalities. But some are fond of opposing government policies, planning and leading demonstrations. Such leaders should be avoided,” he said.

Cherangany MP Joshua Kutuny called on Prime Minister Raila Odinga to step aside following allegations made by former aide Miguna Miguna in the book Peeling Back the Mask.

“He should step down to allow investigations to be done,” he said.
