Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi has accused security agencies of playing succession politics.

Mr Mudavadi said the agencies must keep off succession politics and concentrate on providing security to Kenyans.

Speaking at Redeemed Gospel Church, Liberty Centre, in Nairobi, the ANC leader criticised security chiefs over their obsession with some presidential aspirants despite security threats to hit the country.

Mr Mudavadi, without mentioning names, asked Interior Ministry officials to keep off politics.

“I ask our security agencies to remain true to their call of duty and protect Kenyans. The security agencies should not be obsessed with succession politics, should be apolitical and provide security to all,” he said.

Last week, the government imposed a 30-day dusk-to-dawn curfew on areas affected by insecurity in Lamu. In imposing the curfew, the Ministry of Interior said the curfew follows the recent surge of attacks in the region where seven people have been killed and two others abducted.

At the same time, Mr Mudavadi called on leaders to “weigh their utterances during campaigns so as not to sow seeds of insecurity”.

“The peace of our country is vital and no politician should be allowed to sow seeds of discord among Kenyans. Every Kenyan has a constitutional right to live and work in any part of the country,” he said.

He went on: “It is uncalled for leaders to make utterances that may incite peace loving Kenyans against one another. Let us be responsible in what we say, and leaders should not be excited by crowds.”
