Deputy President William Ruto’s irreducible minimums on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) continue to elicit reactions, with some leaders accusing him of derailing the process.

Dr Ruto on Wednesday said there is still room for consensus on the BBI  and recommended that the referendum be held alongside the 2022 General Election.

Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, his Amani National Congress (ANC) counterpart Musalia Mudavadi and the Orange Democratic Movement yesterday said Dr Ruto’s proposal for a clause-by-clause referendum vote and deferring “is ill-advised”.

Addressing journalists at Kalonzo Musyoka Foundation offices in Nairobi, the Wiper leader told Dr Ruto to come out clearly on his stand.

“Kenyans want change. We cannot vote clause-by-clause for about 78 issues,” he said.

Mr Mudavadi said Kenyans need changes “as soon as possible”.

“Taking Kenyans in circles without a clear position amounts to leadership failure,” he said.

ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna said the party does not agree with the DP’s quest to have a referendum held together with the elections.

“Kenyans struggle with six ballots during General Elections. We cannot afford to have a seventh,” Mr Sifuna said.
