Cord set to file poll petition at Supreme Court

The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) expected to file a petition challenging the election of Uhuru Kenyatta as president Friday.

Cord's legal team led by former Attorney General Amos Wako, Makueni Senator-elect Mutula Kilonzo and Siaya Senator-elect James Orengo will lodge the suit at the Supreme Court.

Cord presidential candidate Raila Odinga has disputed Mr Kenyatta's victory saying the poll was flawed.

On Wednesday, Cord went to court to compel the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and Safaricom to release vital documents it needs to file the petition. IEBC agreed to provide some of the documents.

But Cord leaders said they were yet to get all the documents they needed.

On Thursday, the Cord legal team said the IEBC has been unable to produce the final voters’ register used in the March 4 polls.

Mr Wako questioned the preparedness of the commission to handle the elections “without a credible voter register”.

The Nation also established that the Cord team had received crucial information from Safaricom which lawyers were using to analyse the results released by the IEBC.
