Nation Media Group (NMG) Chairman Wilfred Kiboro has reiterated the company’s long-standing commitment to providing accurate and unbiased news coverage, distancing the firm from the growing menace of fake news and misinformation prevalent on various platforms.

Speaking on Saturday night during the grand finale of the Nation Classic Golf Series at the Ruiru Sports Club in Kiambu County, Dr Kiboro emphasised the role of responsible media in informing the public and holding leaders accountable. He stated that NMG, with a legacy spanning over six decades, remains at the forefront of factual reporting and professional journalism.

“We have been around for about 60 years, and what we stand for is reporting accurately and professionally so that people can be informed about what is happening in the country, and most importantly, to hold our leaders accountable,” he said.

His remarks came in response to ongoing discussions on the rise of fake news, particularly in the wake of recent statements made by President William Ruto. During his State of the Nation address, the President highlighted the issue of fake news and disinformation, which has been a growing challenge in the digital age, especially across social media platforms.

Dr Kiboro called for caution when consuming news and underscored the importance of knowing the source of information.

“Listening to the President’s State of the Nation address the other day, which was very well-delivered, the following day he was complaining about fake news. It is always good to know the source of the information,” Dr Kiboro remarked.

The NMG board chairman asserted that the organisation is not involved in spreading misinformation.

“I want to clarify here that the business of misinformation, fake news and disinformation is not part of what Nation Media Group does. What we do is give you the truth; accurate and professional information without bias,” he stated.

Dr Kiboro urged the public to be cautious when consuming news, advising them to turn to trusted platforms like NMG’s for verified information. He said that the group offers a range of platforms from which consumers can verify news on health, business, agriculture, governance matters, and more.

“Information is power, and at NMG, we are committed to giving the best, most accurate and true information. The readers and viewers can then judge the authenticity of the information,” he said.

Dr Kiboro underscored the importance of media integrity in the age of social media when misinformation can easily spread. He assured the public that NMG will continue to prioritise truth and accuracy in its reporting.

Over 200 golfers from across the country participated in the golf tournament. Cedick Konzolo from Kakamega Sports Club emerged the overall winner of the 2024 series.
