In a year dominated by politics, one would expect readers’ interests to focus on what politicians say, bearing in mind that 2022 is an election year in Kenya. But the numbers tell a different story.

An analysis of the most read stories on Nation.Africa shows that politics took the backstage in as far as readers' interests are concerned.

2. Another firm breaks ties with Omanyala

Even as African 100m record holder Ferdinand Omanyala cast his nets wide for sponsorship, a law firm that handled his doping case terminated its contract with the athlete.

Apart from gaming firm OdiBets, Omanyala said he is yet to seal any deal with any company but disclosed that "talks are still ongoing. There is none as yet.” Read more here.

3. Mystery of Kiambu killer: Troubled or a diligent planner?

Lawrence Njoroge Warunge sat on a bench under Jane Wambui’s eatery and ordered a cup of tea and mandazis for lunch. He left without paying.

Jane runs a shop and a small eatery just a few metres from the Warunge family home in Kiambaa’s Karura village, Kiambu County. She serves tea, mandazis and chapatis and mostly targets construction workers.

4. Teacher in trouble over story on her daily 20km trek

In April, the Education ministry asked a teacher who braved a 20-kilometre round trip to deliver exams to her 18 candidates in Trans Mara East, Narok County to record a statement over a story published by the Nation on her plight.

Sometimes it can be costly to have a rich neighbour. They can cause you misery — and lock you out of your home — too, as hundreds of prospective homeowners have discovered in Kiambu.

6. KDF officer dies in domestic fight with his musician wife

Thirty seven year old Daniel Omollo Onyango, a Kenya Defense Forces officer, returned to his two-bedroom house in Kahawa Wendani one Saturday night, angry and in search of answers from his wife over her recent activities.

His wife, 27-year-old Violet Asela Emu, was an upcoming local secular artiste whose stage name is Zian Achama. She had rented a one-bedroom house along Mirema Drive in Kasarani for her music business, a decision that appeared to have angered her husband.

7. Mystery cross uncovered inside Nairobi’s City Market

A mysterious cross was discovered underneath the City Market in Nairobi, triggering interest by archaeologists and architectural historians on what could be beneath the crucifix-like concrete.

The discovery, made by Nairobi Metropolitan workers who were digging the courtyard normally used by fishmongers to put a new floor, saw the work stop as archaeologists from the National Museums of Kenya were summoned to inspect the site… Read more here.

8. ‘Please call me’ creator rejects Sh354m from phone company

South African courts are set to determine whether the R47 million (Sh354 million) paid to the inventor of the “Please call me” service by the cellular giant Vodacom was sufficient.

This is after the inventor, 44-year-old Nkosana Makate, declined the amount calculated by Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub, saying it was too little.

Makate is demanding R10 billion (Sh75 billion) compensation for coming up with the concept which has since 2001 been used by prepaid phone users to send a free text asking to be phoned back… Read more here.

For two years, Peter Miano, a taxi operator in Nairobi, and his wife, Susan, lived in a rented single room at Kejabe area in Githurai 45.

But like other young couples, they were determined to move into their own house, so they opted for the modest unit in order to save enough to construct their home in Mwihoko 2.
