Grenade from car ‘caused Sunday blast’

What you need to know:

  • Ms Ruth Maina, whose sister, Lydia, was one of the victims, said the vehicle was moving too fast for her to imagine the device was thrown from the car.

An explosion that injured three people near Nairobi’s Pumwani Maternity Hospital was a grenade, police have said.

Buru Buru police boss Hassan Barua said their investigations revealed that the grenade was thrown from a moving vehicle, which had at least three young men inside.

“One of the occupants of the vehicle threw the hand grenade through the window. We have not found out their intention, but clearly these are criminals who have no respect for life,” he said.

Witnesses in the Sunday evening incident said they thought occupants of the vehicle had thrown a stone or litter only for the device to explode seconds after.

Moving vehicle

Ms Ruth Maina, whose sister, Lydia, was one of the victims, said the vehicle was moving too fast for her to imagine the device was thrown from the car.

“It happened so fast, I even entertained the idea that it had been thrown from one of the neighbouring houses. Sadly, my sister was crossing the road when it went off. She was injured on the back and was bleeding badly, we had to take her to hospital,” she said.

Boda boda rider Samuel Maina, said what he thought was a stone landed on the roof of a shed by the roadside only to explode.

One of the victims is admitted to Kenyatta National Hospital, while the other two were treated at Medina and Afwan hospitals and discharged.

None of the suspects has been arrested although Mr Barua said they had vital leads.
