Former Nation Media Group (NMG) editor Dan Otieno has died in a road crash on Waiyaki Way in Nairobi.

According to police, Mr Otieno was hit by an unknown car that was heading towards Kikuyu as he crossed the road at 9pm on Monday.

The car sped off leaving his body on the road.

"The body was taken to the City Mortuary. Investigations are ongoing to establish the identity of the vehicle," said Kabete police boss Francis Wahome.

Mr Otieno served as NMG’s Kisumu and Nyeri bureaus chief and reporter before his exit from the company a few years ago.

Before his death, he was a media consultant and public relations practitioner in Nairobi.

Mr Otieno’s death adds to the list of former and serving Nation staff who have lost their lives in road accidents since 2018.

In March this year, NTV Video Editor Raphael Nzioki died in a hit-and-run accident at the junction of Kenyatta Avenue and Kimathi Street.

After obtaining the CCTV footage of the incident, police managed to get the vehicles’s registration number – KAR 516X — which was traced to a Mr Patrick Ngugi.

According to witnesses, the driver hit Mr Nzioki then sped off, leaving his lifeless body lying in the middle of the road.

Two weeks later, Ms Christine Omulando, a sub-editor with The EastAfrican, was killed in an accident at the Khoja Mosque roundabout.

On September 28, 2019 Anthony Kariuki, a former news editor with www.nation.africa, died in a road accident on Outering Road as he crossed the road to his Buruburu home at around 10pm.

The former deputy president's aide was allegedly hit by a tour van and succumbed to injuries on his way to the hospital.

In November 2018, a former Nation Media Group writer Casper Waithaka died in a road accident at the Athi River-Namanga interchange on Mombasa Road.

He was on his way to Nairobi for a meeting when the accident occurred.

Eye witnesses said his car rolled several times as he tried to avoid hitting a bodaboda rider.

Mr Waithaka had been working as the communications officer for the East African Portland Cement Company at the time of his death.
