Five family members perish in house fire

A family of five has died in a mysterious house fire in Kikuyu Tuesday.

According to Lari OCPD Joshua Opiyo, the fire started at around 3am and razed the six-roomed house.

When the inferno was put off at around 6am, police found the body of Anne Mumbi Ngugi, 26, burnt beyond recognition.

In the same room were the charred remains of her children Elizabeth Gichuki aged 6, Peter Gikaru (4), John Ngugi (2) and Ndung'u Muranje only three weeks old.

A neighbour reported hearing screams only to find the whole house engulfed in smoke when he ventured outside.

The family's father ,Geoffrey Gichuki Gitaru, who works for Panda security was away on night duty but came in the morning. On seeing what was left of his house, he collapsed and was rushed to the hospital unconscious.

Police are investigating the cause of the fire.
