Prof Charles Ong’ondo named new KICD director

Moi University lecturer Prof Charles Ochieng’ Ong’ondo has been appointed as the new Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) director. He will spearhead education reforms in the country.
Prof Ong’ondo was appointed after a vigorous recruitment process led by KICD chairperson Dr Sarah Ruto.
The application process ended on August 25 . Interviews were conducted earlier this month.
Prof Ong’ondo takes over from Dr Joel Mabonga who has been serving in an acting capacity since February.
Dr Julius Jwan, who was the former director, left the agency on February 26 to serve as the Principal Secretary of Technical and Vocational Education.
The position is key for the implementation of the competency based curriculum which is now at grade four and planning to roll out grade five next year.
KICD controls curriculum development and implementation in primary, secondary schools and teachers’ training colleges.
With the roll out of grade five next year, Prof Ong’ondo will expected to ensure smooth curriculum development.
Prof Ong’ondo is an associate professor in the department of Curriculum, Instruction and Educational Media (CIEM) at Moi University.
Since June 30, 2019, he has been serving as a member of the Kenya National Task force on Access, Relevance, Transition, Equity and Quality for Effective Curriculum Reforms Implementation.
He is a member of the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL), Language Association of Eastern Africa and founder member of Kenya Association of English Language Educators and Researchers (ASELER).
He is also a member of Kenya Association of Educational Administration and Management (KAEAM) and has organised, attended and officiated in and presented papers in a number of international conferences, seminars and workshops.
Prior to joining the university as a lecturer, Prof Ong’ondo had more than ten years’ experience as a teacher of English Language and Literature in English at secondary school level in Kenya.
