Matiang'i to dissolve two State agencies in Education ministry

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has announced that two State agencies will be dissolved and their functions transferred to the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation.

Dr Matiang’i said the National Research Fund and the Kenya National Innovation Agency would have their tasks handled by the commission to reduce bureaucracy and duplication of operations in the Education ministry.

He said money spent on salaries and allowances for officers at the two institutions would be used to support research.

He spoke at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, Nairobi, during the National Science Week.

Dr Matiang’i also announced that the ministry would take over the organisation of the National Science Week from next year.

“I will personally chair a committee that will organise the events. I will also involve Industrialisation CS Adan Mohamed and Joe Mucheru of Information Communication Technology,” said the minister.

He said the science week  had been elevated to a key event for the Education ministry, hence the need for support from other stakeholders.

The minister said the government was committed to skills development, adding that the focus was on science, technology and mathematics.

He said Vision 2030 goals would not be achieved if students in higher learning institutions mostly focused on the humanities.
