10 killed as thieves raid companies

More than 10 people have been killed in different parts of the country and coffee worth millions stolen, sparking protests from farmers.

Farmers blame the government, security agencies and private processors.

On Thursday, MPs heard that a journalist had gone into hiding following threats on his life.

Harassing residents

Saboti MP Eugene Wamalwa said Standard journalist Robert Wanyonyi had been threatened by the Provincial Administration in Bungoma because of footage he shot of DC Paul Merinyang’ and police officers harassing residents protesting against a robbery at a coffee factory.

Three guards were killed in the robbery. In Kisii, farmers reported thefts at Nyakenimo, Eaka, Nyabigena, Mabariri, Nyansangio and Nyabomite coffee factories.

At Nyabigena, a suspected coffee thief was killed by watchmen while at Nyakenimo, a watchman was seriously injured by armed thieves and about five 90kg bags of dry coffee stolen. At the neighbouring Eaka factory, 120 bags of dry coffee were stolen.
