Ten things to know about University of Nairobi's Prof George Magoha

  • He is married to Dr Odudu Barbara, a gynaecologist, and together they have one child, Dr Michael Magoha, a surgeon.
  • He has published 59 research papers in reputed international and national journals mostly on sexual dysfunction.

Professor George Magoha, 62, presided over his second last graduation at the University of Nairobi on Friday, August 29.

In December 2014, he will exit the University of Nairobi, where he has been the vice chancellor for the last 10 years.

Here are 10 things about the renowned professor, who is also a consultant urologist.

  1. He is married to Dr Odudu Barbara, a gynaecologist and together they have one child, Dr Michael Magoha, a surgeon.

  2. His research on male erectile dysfunction was used during the invention of Viagra and Cialis, both drugs used to treat erection dysfunction.

  3. He has published 59 research papers, mostly on sexual dysfunction, in reputed international and national journals.

  4. His career in urology was informed by the struggles he witnessed while growing up of men unable to pass urine.

  5. He likes jogging and playing basketball at his compound with his son and plays a bit of golf at Muthaiga Country Club.

  6. He enjoys planting trees at his rural farm.
  7. He is the patron of Old Starehian medics, a group of former students of Starehe Boys Centre who provide free and regular medical and specialist care to current students at no cost.
  8. He has supervised 38 theses of doctors in their postgraduate master's of medicine in surgery.

  9. His professorial inaugural lecture was in October 2003.
  10. He started lecturing in surgery at the University of Nairobi in 1988, and he is still a professor of surgery there.
