What you need to know:

  • Drink copious amounts of water. Water molecules hydrate your hair from inside and out, to make it soft and elastic.
  • Spray your hair daily with water or a water-based spritz. Seal it with oil. Oil is not a moisturiser; oil prevents water from evaporating from your hair.
  • Also, wash and deep condition your hair at least weekly. Saturating it with water at least every seven days will help maintain moisture levels.

Q: I have tried to go natural but my hair is as dry and as tough as steel wool. I am about to give up and go back to a relaxer. Is there anything that actually works to make natural hair soft?

A: Some companies have come up with “texture softeners” but these are a temporary fix that mask the real problem.

To keep your hair soft, no matter what your texture, there are some basic principles you must adhere to. Firstly, water is the ultimate moisturiser.

Drink copious amounts of water. Water molecules hydrate your hair from inside and out, to make it soft and elastic.

Spray your hair daily with water or a water-based spritz. Some naturals even feel the need to spray morning and evening. Seal it with oil. Oil is not a moisturiser; oil prevents water from evaporating from your hair.

Also, wash and deep condition your hair at least weekly. Saturating it with water at least every seven days will help maintain moisture levels.

Lastly, use a shampoo and conditioner from the same product line. Shampoo and conditioners are among the most heavily researched and tested items.

In every brand the pH of one is designed to complement the other.

This properly seals the hair and optimises moisture retention, which in turn makes your hair soft.
