What you need to know:

  • How do we move forward safely, securely, and in a manner consistent with human values?

  • Will robots become self-aware? Will they have rights? Will they take charge?

  • The sooner we begin to contemplate these possibilities, the better equipped and prepared we will be to mitigate and manage the negative impacts.

What do you do?
I work at SafeBoda as a data scientist. I am developing systems to improve our existing architectures and to streamline our engagement with clients online. My tasks are diverse, but my work days generally involve research, coding, in depth analyses and holding meetings with our different business units and stakeholders to understand their needs and challenges. I also make presentations and share findings and results with the business executives.

In simple terms, what is artificial intelligence?
AI is about programming machines to make them mimic human beings’ actions. The machines are superbly rational and take actions that can achieve a specific goal without human interference.

Some startups in the transport sector are applying machine learning to build trust among clients, and some banks have employed chatbots as customer representatives. Safaricom, for instance, is using Zuri to make clients aware of the services they offer.

How did you get into this field?
I have always wanted to be a developer, and joining the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) to pursue a degree in Information Technology was a dream come true. I spent my first year in college exploring the various fields of technology and found that I was particularly drawn to data science. I therefore took data related courses on Udemy and Coursera and worked on projects in database management, data mining, data warehousing, and business intelligence.

I later secured a data science internship at NCBA bank in 2018 and this exposed me to first hand applications of AI in solving complex business problems. I also found a data science mentor in the same bank who has guided and supported me throughout my journey. To gain experience, I have taken internships and participated in several data science hackathons such as the Oracle Student Hackathon.

How does the future look like with the advancements being made in AI?
AI will continue to achieve spectacular progress in agriculture, healthcare, public services and in the financial sector. We are likely to see machines with intelligence levels that are either similar or more enhanced than humans, and we shall rely more on technological systems to make life easier. Additionally, Machine Learning might increase the divide between the poor and the wealthy, or create horrifying weapons. Neither outcome is inevitable, so we need to uphold our values and principles.

Do you think Kenya is prepared to fully utilise AI?
Not at all. There is so much planning, investment and policy making required before local businesses and decision makers can begin to leverage fully on this transformative technology. We still have a long way to go and to realise the true benefits of AI, we must join hands, widen our vision and clearly define our values. We should also increase funding to encourage collaborations on research and development of AI in the country.

What about the risks involved?
I worry about the long-term impact of AI tools on humans. How do we move forward safely, securely, and in a manner consistent with human values? Will robots become self-aware? Will they have rights? Will they take charge? The sooner we begin to contemplate these possibilities, the better equipped and prepared we will be to mitigate and manage the negative impacts.

Your advice to someone interested in pursuing a similar course?
In this digital world, it helps to build presence online. Build and develop a strong, compelling and impressive portfolio which exhibits traits such as problem solving, critical thinking and effective communication. Document and showcase your work on blogs and videos. Lastly, build meaningful relationships with experienced data professionals.

What are your other interests?
I am currently learning Spanish and also mastering the art of public speaking. Additionally, I am a farmer with special interests in rearing snails and rare breeds of rabbits.
