Ask HR: Is it wise for me to apply for a higher internal position that I find boring?

What you need to know:

  • You should be ready to serve in the ‘boring’ department for some time since there might not be a slot for a permanent position in your dream department.

  • I would advise you to experience the department for a period of 12 months. This way you will establish what you don’t like.

  • You never know, you might be the person the department has been waiting for to make it more vibrant.

I am a contractual staff and my employer is currently hiring permanently, although in a different department. Most of our work cuts across departments so I could also fit in there. My problem is that I find their primary work a tad boring. My theory is that I can apply for the job, then when I get it, I request to be moved in another department. What would your advice?
