Ask HR: What do I tell this young talent who has a strange and coloured hairstyle?

What you need to know:

  • Every organisation needs to draw its shoreline of conduct that is acceptable, bearing in mind the importance of striking the right balance between its desired collective culture and the preservation of individual liberty.

  • Although benefits accrue to organisations that leverage diversity, it is important to know the point beyond which it is no longer useful.

  • Tolerating every difference can be just as pernicious as enforcing sterile uniformity among employees.

I am a HR business partner in a bank. We have a promising, young male young talent who has recently adopted an uncommon hairstyle and dyed it too. The head of his department would like me to deal with the matter as she says that the young man will miss career opportunities because of this. How do I handle this?
