Ask HR: What do I do with this boss who is excluding me from meetings?

What you need to know:

  • If he apologises and gives genuine reasons, trust his word and let the matter rest. If he becomes defensive, know that you are dealing with a possible case of power bullying.


  • Being excluded from important meetings is a subtle bullying tactic that one may take long to notice. If you feel powerless or are afraid of having this conversation, you can raise a formal complaint about the bullying through your internal grievance processes.

My boss has recently formed habit of shutting me out of key meetings. In the past three months, there have been meetings that I was supposed to attend, but I was not invited to. I overheard my colleagues discussing a new process that I was unaware of, only to learn that it was shared at a meeting I failed to attend. I was shocked to realise that I had not been invited to three important meetings that all my peers attended. I want to raise this but wonder where to start?
