WFP reduces food rations for refuges at Kakuma, Kalobeyei

The World Food Programme (WFP) has reduced food rations distributed at Kakuma Refugee Camp and Kalobeyei Integrated Settlement in Turkana West Sub-County.
The refugees said that they are currently receiving one ration per month down from two.
Mr Abubakari Mohammed, a Sudanese from Darfur who has been staying at the refugee camp since 2006, said that Covid-19 containment measures worsened the situation, noting that he has absolutely nothing to help him take care of his family.
"We fear that due to food scarcity we are staring at starvation and malnutrition for lack of a regular aid to meet our food needs," Mr Mohammed said.
Another refugee, Mr Noordin Mohammed, said that they also cannot change diet.
The refugees were speaking as they received meat on Sunday from a non-governmental organisation which had slaughtered 30 cows and 48 goats.
Vulnerable refugees
The NGO, Helping Hand for Relief and Development, targeted vulnerable refugees and nearby locals during celebrations to mark Iddu-ul-Adha.
Mr Musa Ibrahim, an official of the NGO, said they targeted vulnerable Sudanese and Congolese refugees at Kakuma Refugee Camp and locals living nearby.
"Each beneficiary got five kilogrammes of meat. Many families are poor and the Covid-19 pandemic has worsened the situation making difficult for them to afford some foods they consider luxury." Mr Ibrahim said.
He called on donors and well-wishers to step up support for refugees who are currently facing starvation.
Last week, WFP warned of starvation at refugee camps if donor funding reduces further.
