Nyandarua county government steps up efforts to recover public land

The county government of Nyandarua is seeking support from the national Lands Ministry to recover thousands of acres of public land in the hands of private developers.
This includes the 800-acre Pyrethrum Board of Kenya (PBK) and Gikingi Community land in Ol Joro Orok sub-county. The PBK farm is currently occupied by farmers and former employees claiming payment arrears from the board.
The county administration has been making fruitless efforts to reclaim the land and use it to revive pyrethrum and other agricultural-related research work.
The board subdivided the land and leased it to small-scale potato growers.
In a meeting with Lands Cabinet Secretary Farida Karoney and National Lands Commission officials, Nyandarua Governor, Francis Kimemia, said the private developers have frustrated his government’s efforts to initiate community development and support programmes on the lands.
The governor also wants the ministry and commission to fast-track the cancellation of overlapping titles on such public land, which includes the governor's office in Ol Kalou Town.
