Three children from the same family have drowned in a dam in Mukinyai village in Molo.

Area Assistant Chief Zack Munari said the incident happened at around 4pm Saturday when the children were playing near a quarry.

He said the children were playing near the quarry which was flooded following heavy rains that pounded in the area recently. Mr Munari added that they all drowned as they tried to rescue each other.

The assistant chief identified the children as Michael Kiritu, 8, Victor Kaniaru, 11, and Grace Wairimu, 15, — all pupils at the nearby Mukinyai Primary School.

He said the second child drowned as he tried to rescue his younger brother before their elder sister also drowned as she rushed to rescue her brothers.

Bodies retrieved

The incident has left locals in shock.

The administrator said local divers retrieved the bodies of the three from the dam at around 6pm.

The incident happened along the border of Molo and Elburgon.

Mr Munari urged residents to take care of their children especially during this period of the Covid-19 pandemic and the December festive season.

Police have launched investigations into the ncident.

The bodies were moved to Molo Sub-County Hospital mortuary.
