  • Woman's family denounces her relationship with a man who wants her out of a rehab centre.
  • Man at the centre of dispute also accused of detaining the woman for two years in Nairobi.

A man’s bid to free his girlfriend from a rehabilitation centre has placed him on a collision path with her parents, who now want him investigated for criminal offences.

The family of Ms Georgina Menye has denounced her relationship with Mr Warren Nyanjom, which they termed toxic and illicit.

Ms Menye’s father, Solomon Kiprono Menya, in his reply to Mr Nyanjom’s suit, has come out to defend the institutions, saying that he was responsible for his daughter’s admission into rehab.

Mr Kiprono said he made the decision upon consultations with her daughter whose health had deteriorated due to alcohol and drugs.

The father accused the man of detaining his 25-year-old daughter for two years in Nairobi where he subjected her into alcohol and drug abuse without their knowledge.

Illegal relationship

“This petition is premised on an alleged illegal relationship between Nyanjom and my daughter which should be subjected to criminal investigations. It is out of the love for my daughter that I took her to the rehab centre where (her) condition could be properly managed since it was evident that she had been abused of toxic alcohol,” said Mr Kiprono.

The man said he only managed to see his daughter after the two years when she attended a burial at his home in Nakuru on November 4.

In his petition before Justice Hillary Chemitei, Mr Nyanjom, a resident of Nairobi, claimed to sue on behalf of Ms Menye, who he said is his fiancée, with whom they had cohabited for two years.

He accused the facility of illegally detaining Ms Menye without her consent and proof that she needed  treatment.

In the application, filed under a certificate of urgency, Mr Nyanjom wants the court to order the institution to allow the woman engage the services of an alternative mental assessment professional and allow the petitioner to access her pending the hearing and determination of the matter.

Mental assessment

He claims to be ready to facilitate an independent mental assessment on the woman to establish whether or not she is eligible for admission to a rehabilitation facility.

Ms Menye, on her part, has, however, dismissed the relationship, which she also claims was toxic.

She denied being Mr Nyanjom’s fiancée, saying she consented to the decision for rehabilitation.

“Nyanjom is not my fiancee’ and I have never contacted him seeking help out of rehab. He is a busybody out to ruin my life. I am happy and comfortable under the good care of JOMEC,” said Ms Menye in her affidavit.

Former National Campaign Against Drug Abuse chairman John Mututho, who is the founder of the institution, defended his facility, saying that Ms Menye was brought by her father for rehabilitation care.

Mr Mututho says the woman, who was diagnosed with alcohol and marijuana abuse, has been enrolled in psycho-education classes and counselling sessions.

He wants the petition dismissed for being an abuse of court process, arguing that Mr Nyanjom is a potential criminal.

“It is clear that the petitioner is attempting to use the court process to advance his criminal activities of alcohol and substance abuse,” said Mr Mututho.
