Eight arrested over violent robberies during Ruto’s city tour

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has announced the arrest of eight suspects in relation to the series of attacks that were reported along Thika Road during the first second day of President William Ruto’s tour in Nairobi City.

In a statement, coming two days after the incident, DCI said that they launched a crackdown to apprehend and prosecute the gang that attacked and robbed innocent Kenyans.

According to DCI, the eight are among a group of 10 who robbed members of the public of their phones and other valuables in Mathare Area 4.

“So far, John Junior Oginga, who was armed with a knife when he attacked and robbed an unsuspecting individual of an Oppo A77S mobile phone valued at Sh28, 000, was arrested. Oginga was apprehended along Thika Highway and was escorted to Pangani Police Station,” DCI said in a statement.

Other suspects includes Jared Nyanza, Darlin Lande, Daniel Okombe, Mike Robert, Elvis Otieno, Reagan Omondi and Mathenge Gachiri.

The suspects were taken to Muthaiga Police Station. Some of the items which were recovered from the suspects include seven brand-new shirts, believed to be stolen property.

“All the suspects were processed and subsequently arraigned. Meanwhile, Police Officers have intensified their crackdown to bring to justice additional suspects involved in these criminal acts.”

During the President’s visit in Mathare constituency, several pedestrians and motorists lost their valuable items as the gang wreaked havoc in presence of heavy security detail within the area.

While the arrest comes two days after the incident, the detectives gave singled out Thika Road incident, the same situation was reported to have taken place in Kamukunji, where people were mugged just after the President finished his speech.

Also, an ugly scene was reported on Wednesday in Kawangware area during the President’s visit, where people lost their valuable items as the gangs robbed Kenyans in broad daylight.

Meanwhile, a foreigner, whose identity remains unknown, died on Thursday morning in a road crash on Ngong Road, Adam Arcade. 

Traffic on the busy road was disrupted for about an hour as the victim's body lay on the road before police officers arrived on the scene.

“Following a road traffic accident that occurred today at Adams Arcade along Ngong Road involving a government vehicle which resulted in the death of a pedestrian who is a foreign national, the National Police Service is now handling the matter and investigations have commenced,” statement reads.

The police has asked anyone with more information regarding the accident to come forward and assist them with the investigation.

All motorists, pedestrians and other road users has been asked to exercise caution to prevent similar accidents.
