Chaos as Jua Kali traders block Jogoo Road

A section of Jogoo road, Makadara sub-County of Nairobi which experienced violent protests from Uhuru Market Jua Kali traders on March 18, 2025.
Over 300 Jua Kali traders at Uhuru market blocked Jogoo road during violent protests on Tuesday morning.
The rowdy mob disrupted traffic along the busy road from 11 am to 11.40 am, protesting against attempts by county authorities to evict them.
They lit bonfires on the road and blocked motorists before being dispersed by police.
Makadara Deputy County Commissioner Philip Koima led other county and security officers to address the petitions by the traders who are opposed to evacuation notices by Nairobi County government.
They claimed there was no public participation in the process and insufficient time to move out.
Others also demanded to be provided with alternative space to sell their merchandise.
The traders were however warned by DCC to desist from criminal activities, especially vandalism or destruction of roads and other critical infrastructure while protesting. They were advised to use legal and peaceful channels to resolve conflicts.
DCC also warned criminal gangs who lay in wait to commit robbery and other heinous acts of lawlessness.
The traders were advised to dialogue with the county government market officials or administration to find alternative spaces awaiting completion of the ultra- modern market where they would be accorded first priority.
The contractor is expected to commence the construction of the Sh315 million ultra-mordern market immediately the site is handed over by the city county government.
The project will be completed in one year.
