Police in Murang'a recover stolen cows, arrest lorry driver
Police in Murang'a South on Monday morning recovered two high-grade cows worth Sh250,000 from rustlers, which had earlier been stolen, in an incident where three gunshots were fired.
According to area police boss Alexander Shikondi, officers from Maragua Police Station received a distress call at around 2am hours that a suspicious vehicle had been seen driving into Samar village.
"The area has been hit by a wave of stock thefts and officers were immediately dispatched. Their commander, Chief Inspector Cleophas Juma also followed his officers to the ground," he said.
On seeing the officer’s approaching, the driver of the white lorry reportedly attempted to drive off.
"Our officers fired three shots that deflated the front right side and both rear tyres. It is then that the driver alighted and escaped into the darkness," Mr Shikondi said.
Upon inspection, two Friesian grade cows — both worth Sh250,000 — were found in the lorry.
"Meanwhile, members of the public who had responded to the commotion gave chase and apprehended the fleeing driver and handed him over to the officers," Mr Shikondi said.
He said upon interrogation, the driver identified himself as a resident of Makongeni estate in Thika town.
He also revealed that there were other accomplices in the theft and police are now after them.
Mr Shikondi thanked both the public and his officers for remaining vigilant even deep into the night.
He said the cooperation between the public and officers is posting positive results in the fight against crime in the area.
"We will record statements from all involved and the motor vehicle as well as the recovered cows and the suspect are all in legal custody of Maragua Police Station. We will press charges on the suspect," he said.
