At least 12 people were killed on Saturday during two morning attacks by bandits in Marsabit County as insecurity escalates ahead of next year’s general election.

County Police Commander Robinson Mboloi said an unknown number of bandits ambushed the Qubi Qallo and Dogogich areas of Sagante Jaldesa at around 6 am on Saturday.

“We can confirm that 12 people were today killed in twin attacks at Qubi Qallo and Dogogich areas in Saku sub-county by unknown bandits,” Mr Mboloi said.

Three other people sustained gunshot injuries. The bandits got away with 1,000 livestock and 300 sheep and goats from Qubi Qallo. In the second incident at Dogogich, bandits drove away more than 800 head of cattle and 1,500 sheep and goats.

However, a multiagency security team dispatched to the area engaged in a shootout with the rustlers, and four of them were gunned down. No suspects had been arrested in connection with the twin attacks.

Mr Mboloi assured residents that security had been beefed up as detectives launched a probe.

Further, the police commander appealed to the residents to work collaboratively and to supply the security agencies with crucial information that could lead to the arrest of those behind the unending attacks in Saku.

In November, eight people were killed along the Marsabit-Badasa road while travelling to Badasa. They included a driver, turnboy and four other passengers.
