A notorious brewer of illicit alcohol on Saturday night attacked and seriously injured an assistant chief in Laikipia County during a raid on a chang’aa den.

Mrs Jane Muchui, the assistant chief of Karandi Sub-Location, Gituamba Location was treated at a Nyahururu private hospital and discharged following the injuries.

Narrating the incident at the hospital, Mrs Muchui said the brewer managed to close the door behind her as soon as she entered the drinking den.

Two police officers accompanying the administrator were locked out.

“He was quick to close the door before the two officers I was with entered.

“In the struggle that ensued, the suspect managed to injure me on the shoulder,” she said.

ESCAPED THROUGH THE WINDOW

The suspect managed to flee through a bedroom window but one of the revellers at the den was arrested.

Mrs Muchui said the suspect is one of the people threatening administrators carrying out the war on illicit brews.

She appealed to the government to provide security to chiefs saying they have attracted many enemies during the crackdown on illicit brews.

“Chiefs, particularly women are looked down upon with disdain and threatened every day and there is need for their security to be reviewed,” she said.

Three chiefs in the district recently received threats through leaflets dropped in their homes by people suspected to be brewers of illicit liquor.

Mrs Muchui said despite the threats, the administrators have been able to curb the runaway brewing in their areas.

She said only nine people in her sub location were still dealing in the brew ‘after buying it from outside the larger Gituamba Location.’

The suspect who attacked her was by Monday, still at large but police said they were in hot pursuit.

He is also wanted for another assault incident where a woman’s leg was broken in an attack.
