A 17-year-old girl has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge at the High Court in Kisumu.

The minor is accused of killing a 20-year-old man last month following a misunderstanding.

The girl and the man are said to have been in a troubled relationship.

The charge sheet says that she intentionally killed the man on September 7 at Apoko market centre in Nyakach, Kisumu.

The accused is said to have stabbed the victim with a kitchen knife before fleeing the scene.

She was arrested the same day after the victim's father reported the incident at Pap Onditi Police Station.

The man succumbed to stab wounds while undergoing treatment at the Kericho Referral Hospital.

The girl underwent a mental assessment on September 29 at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital and it was established that  she was fit to take a plea.

She appeared before Justice Fred Ochieng Thursday and pleaded not guilty.

The girl was released on a Sh300,000 bond. This is after she pleaded with the court to grant her favourable bond terms because she is a minor.

The court appointed lawyer Byrone Menzes to represent the suspect during trial.

The case will be mentioned on October 29 for further directions.
