The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) on Saturday re-launched a registration drive to register more members from Kisii County.

Party officials said the number of UDA members in the county was low hence the need for a serious campaign, but did not specify the figures.

The party is linked to Deputy President William Ruto, who has been keen to consolidate a strong support base in Kisii, a region perceived to be a stronghold of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), whose leader is Mr Raila Odinga.

A section of UDA officials and supporters who met at Alexander Hotel in Kisii vowed to ensure more members are registered as they popularise Dr Ruto’s presidential bid in the region.

The meeting was led by Kisii Deputy Speaker Davins Onuso, governorship candidate Rachel Otundo and youth leader Japheth Nyakundi.

“We have realised the number of registered members from Kisii is low so we have re-launched the registration drive,” said Mr Onuso.

The officials further said they want to make the party youth-friendly and capitalise on their tech-savviness, so they are putting a lot of focus on this age group. The party membership process is now being done online.

Ms Otundo said they are targeting the at least one million voters from the region and asked for the government’s support in the area of security.

UDA first launched a party membership drive in June, but it did not yield the desired goals.

Officials driving the registration say the party did well in the recent Bonchari by-election despite being new – a source of hope for better performance in the 2022 General election.
