Police used tear gas to disperse contractors who had stormed Kisii County Assembly premises accusing ward reps of awarding themselves tenders.

The officers engaged the contractors in running battles for the better part of Thursday morning before forcing them out of the assembly grounds with teargas.

The contractors claimed that some MCAs had turned into business men and had awarded themselves tenders for various roads in their wards.

Further, they had paid themselves with the little money that was recently released for the county, leaving out other contractors with no pay.

“We want speaker David Kombo and governor James Ongwae to sort out this mess once and for all. We cannot have MCAs who are supposed to oversight the county government doing business. This is conflict of interest,” said Ofman Ondieki, the Kisii County Contractors Association Secretary General.

The contractors briefly caused commotion at the Kisii County Government offices when they demanded to be addressed by governor Ongwae.

The county chief promised to hold a meeting with them in a week’s time.

“This county is ours and we must take care of it. We must develop it. Let us consult more and things will be okay,” he told the contractors.
