Several people hurt as school bus, matatu collide in Kisii

  • Kisii County traffic boss Erick Gitinchi said the bus had more than 45 mourners.
  • Witnesses said the matatu was overtaking other vehicles when it collided head on with the bus.

Several people have been injured in Kisii town's Maili Mbili area in an accident involving a school bus and a matatu.  

The Kariobangi Girls North School bus was ferrying mourners to Rongo in Migori County when it collided head on with the matatu that was heading to Keroka from Kisii town on Thursday evening.

Kisii County traffic boss Erick Gitinchi said the bus had more than 45 mourners while the number of passengers in the matatu could not be ascertained.

Witnesses said the matatu was overtaking when it collided head on with the bus.

OVERTAKING

"The matatu was overtaking when it collided with the bus, several people in the matatu were injured," said Tom Obiri, a witness.

Mr Gitinchi said he had sent his officers to various hospitals in the county to collect data of the injured. 

"We are yet to get full details (of the injured) but some of passengers are being attended to at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital," Mr Gitinchi told the Nation.

Some passengers were bleeding when the Nation visited Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital.

No person died in the Thursday evening accident.
