Police have arrested 14 secondary school students at a house party in Kirinyaga County.

During the arrest at Mucagara market, police found used condoms, gambling cards and alcoholic drinks.

The students are detained at Kianyaga police station for interrogation.

According to the Kirinyaga East Sub-County police boss Anthony Wanjuu, the owner of the house, who is a trader, was also seized and booked in at the same police station.

The students, 12 boys and two girls from different schools, had allegedly been allowed by the trader to use the house to celebrate the birthday of one of their colleagues on Sunday.

However, police acting on a tip-off from residents, raided the house at dawn on Monday and found the drunken students dancing with some empty beer bottles, condoms and gambling cards scattered in the room.

Brothel

The police want to establish whether or not the trader has been using her rental house as a brothel.

"We suspect that the youthful trader, who was inside the room with the students, was using the house as a brothel. She could be charged in court," said Mr Wanjuu.

The police boss said the students could also be charged with being drunk and disorderly once investigations are complete.

He lamented that students, who were as young as 15, were engaging in activities that could ruin their lives.

"They were merry-making in a congested room in total disregard to Covid-19 preventive measures put in place by the government," he said.

Mr Wanjuu advised parents to monitor the movements of their children when schools are closed.

"Parents should take care of them during holidays so that they don't get ruined. Students can easily be wasted away if they are not taken care of," he said.
