Police at Karucho market in Kirinyaga County are pursuing a woman who is alleged to have killed her boyfriend in a suspected love triangle.
Alexander Muthike, 40, spent March 17, 2025, eking out a living doing manual jobs as usual.
When he went back home at around 5pm, a quarrel erupted between him and his wife, which ended tragically after she allegedly stabbed him with a kitchen knife.
Residents said before the fatal attack, the two lovers had had incessant quarrels. "Sometimes they would fight, especially when they went out drinking," one of the residents said.
The neighbours said a single stab in the chest sent Muthike sprawling on the floor where they found him in a pool of blood.
“We heard them quarrel briefly after which there was commotion and screams followed. When we went to the scene to check what was going on, we found the lifeless body of Muthike lying in a pool of blood. The woman had fled with her three children,” said Mr Philip Ngari, a resident.
He said the 10am incident attracted scores of residents who rioted in the market as they looked for the suspect whom they described as a dangerous woman.
They combed the entire market and the surrounding bushes, vowing to avenge the death of their colleague.
When they traced the suspect they reported the matter to Kianyaga police station with officers arriving at the scene moments later.
The body of the deceased was moved to Kibugi Funeral Home in Kutus town for postmortem examination.
Mr Ngari said the suspect hailed from Tharaka Nithi County and called on the police to bring her to book.
"This is a serious matter which should be thoroughly investigated and the culprit apprehended to face prosecution," he said
Ms Sarah Wanjiku, who was picking tea when the incident happened, said she learnt of the demise of her brother with shock.
"I abandoned what I was doing when I heard people shouting and rushed to the scene. On arrival I found my brother lying dead with flesh wounds," said Ms Wanjiku.
Residents said before the fatal attack, the assailant had been seen in a local bar enjoying drinks.
"I saw the woman in the bar taking alcohol but a few hours later I was taken aback when I heard that she had eliminated my friend of many years," said Mr Joseph Nyaga.
Kirinyaga East Sub-County police boss, Johnson Wachira, said the deceased also had head injuries, indicating that he was fatally attacked. He added that the matter was being treated as murder and that the suspect was being pursued.
