Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku has castigated local politicians and a clique of his senior staff for engaging in early campaigns, saying they are derailing the county’s development agenda.

After a month of political re-alignments in readiness for the 2027 polls involving local elected leaders and some senior county staff, Mr Lenku has told county employees who want to engage in politics to ship out of his administration.

Some employees are accused of warming up to a senior State officer—one of Mr Lenku’s fierce critics—eyeing the governorship in 2027.

Speaking in Kajiado South sub-County over the weekend, Mr Lenku said his administration is committed to delivering his four-pronged agenda—liveable towns, moderated pastoralism, healthcare and education boost, and climate mitigation project—before his term ends.

'Unite to serve'

The governor urged politicians to shun early campaigns and instead unite to deliver services to the electorate.

“I have noticed with concern some of my administration members of staff are politicking instead of serving the residents.

"It will not be business as usual; it’s either they resign and continue politicking or stay and serve the people,” Mr Lenku said without mentioning names.

Inside feud?

However, the county boss’s sentiments point to the frosty relationship between him and his two-term deputy Martin Moshisho, who has been traversing the county in an attempt to chat his own political path in a bid to succeed his boss in 2027.

All indicators show Mr Lenku might not throw his political weight behind his deputy in the 2027 elections.

Mr Lenku said he will support President William Ruto to deliver his development agenda to Kenyans in the remaining period of his term.

“Our core mandate as the Maa community will be to support President Ruto to deliver his campaign promises to Kenyans. We are optimistic transfer of the Amboseli National Park will be effected soonest, Ilasit-Taveta road constructed and Ilchamus community get their sub-county in the first term of President Ruto,” he said.

And after months-long silence over the livestock mass vaccination exercise launched last week, Mr Lenku urged the Maa community to have their animals vaccinated, throwing his political friends who have been opposing the exercise under the bus.
