  • This has affected the peaceful coexistence between the Borana and Somali communities.
  • Mr Kamonde appealed to youths and residents not to be divided along tribal and clan lines.

Two people were on Tuesday evening killed while four others were seriously injured following a clash between two groups of herders from Isiolo and Garissa in Garbatulla on the border of the two counties.

A shootout ensued when the group from Garissa was approaching Kasa grazing field in Kinna which is used by the Isiolo herders intending to set up a camp in the area.

The Garissa herders are said to have been on a revenge mission following a recent attack where three people were gunned down by unknown people.

Garbatulla Deputy County Commissioner Victor Kamonde said police officers have been deployed to the area to beef up security and protect residents’ properties.

Receiving treatment

The administrator said three of the injured people are from Garissa while the other one is from Isiolo and is currently receiving treatment in one of the public hospitals.

“We are yet to establish the motive of the attack but have deployed officers to secure the area and protect properties as investigations into the matter continue,” said Mr Kamonde.

Since the April 20 attack, tension has been high in the area, affecting the peaceful coexistence between the Borana and Somali communities which have lived in peace for many years.

Arrest culprits

The Garbatulla Sub-County security team, area peace committee, elders and Isiolo South MP Abdi Koropu have been at the forefront in enhancing peace between the two communities.

“I am puzzled that there are people who are hell bent to fuel animosity for reasons best known to them but it is just a matter of time and they will be brought to book. We shall not allow a few individuals to spoil the gains we have made in the last few years to have security in the sub-county,” the administrator insisted.

He appealed to youths and residents not to be divided along tribal and clan lines.
