Police in Isiolo Thursday evening arrested a colleague along the Isiolo-Moyale highway after he was in possession of bhang estimated to be worth Sh150,000, which was hidden in a private vehicle.

The police constable from the Diplomatic Police Unit, who is attached to the Ugandan Embassy in Nairobi, was in the company of his five-year-old son when a multi-agency security team manning a roadblock intercepted him near Merti junction around midnight.

The five kilos of bhang were stashed in the Toyota Vitz’s dashboard and was discovered by sniffer dogs.

The officer was in possession of a Ceska pistol loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition, a police report indicated.

Isiolo County Police Commander Joseph Kigen said the suspect is being detained at Isiolo Police Station awaiting arraignment on Monday.

“He will be arraigned on Monday and charged with drug trafficking,” Mr Kigen said.

The police boss said his officers were on high alert to arrest drug traffickers using the route to transport narcotics to Nairobi.

“We have intensified surveillance across the county and along the route and traffickers should be warned that the government is way ahead of them,” he said.
