Three inmates facing robbery with violence charges who had been remanded at the Isiolo GK Prison have escaped.

County Prisons Commander Ibrahim Hassan said the remandees, who hail from Isiolo, escaped through a ventilation hole at around 4.30am Monday.

The prison boss said two officers who were on duty had been interdicted following the incident.

“They tempered with the cell’s ventilation and passed through it.

“The officers responded by shooting, but it was raining heavily and they all escaped,” said Mr Hassan.

One of the officers tried to alert others who were at a watch tower, but the remandees escaped through a fence.

Prison wardens were later dispatched to different areas including the remandees’ homes and bus stage to hunt and arrest them.

Criminal investigation officers have launched investigations into the matter.

Mr Hassan said the two officers who were interdicted will serve as an example to the rest.

The remandees were awaiting judgment for their cases.
